Cookie Policy: How RiskStance Uses Cookies, Ads and Banners

What cookies are, which ones we and our advertising partners use, and how to accept, reject or change your choices at any time.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit. They help a site work properly, remember your choices, measure how it is used and, in some cases, show advertising. This Cookie Policy explains which cookies and similar technologies RiskStance.com uses, why we use them, who sets them and how you can control them. It should be read with our Privacy and Cookie Policy, which explains how we handle personal data under the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR).

The site is owned and run by Jis Johnson, who also owns jis.to. Our guides are well researched and created with a combination of AI and human writing and editing. We do not use AI tools to track or profile you through cookies.

First-party cookies

Set by RiskStance.com directly, for example to remember your cookie choice.

Third-party cookies

Set by other organisations whose services we use, such as analytics tools and advertising partners.

Session cookies

Temporary files that are deleted when you close your browser.

Persistent cookies

Stay on your device for a set period or until you delete them.

Similar technologies

We and our partners may also use pixels and tags (small images or code that record a page view or ad interaction), local storage in your browser, and mobile advertising identifiers. In this policy, “cookies” includes all of these. We do not use device fingerprinting to track you without your knowledge.

Under PECR, we need your consent before placing cookies that are not strictly necessary. When you first visit RiskStance, a cookie banner appears with three clear options: accept all, reject all non-essential cookies, or choose which categories to allow. Rejecting is as easy as accepting, non-essential cookies are not set until you agree, and we do not use pre-ticked boxes. We record your choice so that we do not keep asking, and we ask again after a reasonable period or if our cookies change significantly. Strictly necessary cookies do not need consent because the site cannot function securely without them.

You are in control. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer of the site. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that took place before you did so.

The Cookies We Use

The table below lists the main categories and typical examples. Exact cookie names and durations can change as providers update their services, and the live list in our cookie settings panel is the most current.

Third-Party Advertising and Banner Cookies

RiskStance may show advertisements and banners supplied by third-party networks and exchanges, such as Google AdSense or Ad Manager. Where you give consent, these partners may set cookies or read identifiers on your device to do the following.

  • Show ads based on your interests and your activity across different websites (personalised advertising).
  • Limit how often you see the same ad and measure whether an ad was seen or clicked.
  • Understand reach and performance for advertisers and for us.
  • Detect fraud, invalid traffic and abuse.

If you do not consent, you may still see ads, but they should be contextual or non-personalised, meaning they relate to the page you are reading rather than your profile. Some basic ad delivery and fraud prevention may take place without cookies. We may pass your consent choice to partners using industry tools such as the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework or Google consent signals. Advertising partners are responsible for how they use data they collect, and you should read their privacy notices. For Google, see how it uses data from partner sites at its Privacy and Terms pages.

How to Manage Your Cookie Choices

On our site

Click “Cookie settings” in the footer to reopen the banner and change your choices by category.

Industry opt-out tools

Visit Your Online Choices (UK and EU), DAA or NAI (US) to opt out of interest-based advertising from participating companies.

Google settings

Use Google Ad Settings to turn off ad personalisation on your Google account and devices.

Privacy signals

Where supported, we respect browser signals such as Global Privacy Control as an opt-out preference.

Opting out of personalised advertising does not remove ads from the site. It only reduces how closely they are tailored to you.

Browser Controls

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. How you do so depends on your browser, and the main providers explain it on their help pages: Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera. Mobile devices also let you reset or limit your advertising identifier in system privacy settings. If you block all cookies, including strictly necessary ones, parts of the site may not work as expected, and we may not be able to remember your choices. For more neutral guidance on cookies in the UK, see the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk and the independent site aboutcookies.org.

Cookies and Your Personal Data

Some cookie data is personal data, for example IP addresses and unique identifiers. Where that is the case, our Privacy and Cookie Policy explains our lawful bases, how long we keep data, your rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection and portability, and how to complain to the ICO. Where third-party partners are separate controllers, you can exercise your rights with them directly.

Visitors From Outside the UK

  • EU and EEA: the ePrivacy rules and the EU GDPR require similar prior consent for non-essential cookies, and the options above are designed to meet that standard.
  • United States: residents of states with privacy laws, such as California, may opt out of targeted advertising and the sale or sharing of personal data through our cookie settings, browser signals such as Global Privacy Control, or by emailing us.
  • Canada, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, India and elsewhere: local laws may give you extra rights, and you can contact us or your local regulator if you have questions.

Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this policy when we add or remove services, when partners change their cookies or when the law changes. The date at the bottom shows the latest version. If a change is significant, for example adding a new advertising partner, we will update our banner and ask for consent again where required.

Contact Us

If you have a question about our use of cookies, or if you want to make a data request, email hi@riskstance.com. We aim to reply within three working days and to handle data requests within one month.

Do I have to accept cookies?

No. Strictly necessary cookies are always on, but analytics, advertising and other non-essential cookies are used only if you accept them.

Why do I still see ads if I reject cookies?

Ads may still appear, but they should be contextual or non-personalised, based on the page rather than your browsing profile.

How do I change my mind later?

Use the “Cookie settings” link in the footer to update or withdraw your consent at any time.

Are cookies used to train AI?

No. Our articles are created with AI and human editing, but we do not use cookies to feed reader data into AI tools.
